Are you a designer? Why or why not? I studied Product Design. I have designed a few chairs but haven’t produced (almost) any of them. Instead of that, I’ve been working in graphic design and social media strategy for a few years now. Also, I recently did the art direction for a music video and sometimes I make notebooks.
One word to describe your take on design: Simple
The last thing you made: I made a series of non-functional chairs in 2019, I produced one of them and got it exhibited at the Museum of Costa Rican Art during Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales the same year.
The next thing you want to make: I wanted to make something small before doing a chair or something that feels bigger, so I’m working on some cutting boards at the moment. It's difficult to collect or buy designed objects in Costa Rica; I mean it’s not a common thing to do here, it’s not part of the culture yet, but it’s slowly starting to gain relevance. So, doing something small firs, feels good to me.
A designed object you adore: I love Andrea Branzi’s tea set that he made with silver and birch wood.
A designed object you can’t stand the sight of: Michel Ducaroy's Togo, I’m sorry! I’ve seen it too many times.
A moment of pure creative joy: When I’m creating something just for fun or when I have long conversations with friends. I deeply enjoy moments of pure freedom.
When we say “designing the future,” what comes to mind? When we design thinking about a sustainable future and when we are responsible about the materials we use, understanding how this impacts the environment. We should be making products that last longer and age beautifully.
If you could show your work to anyone in the world, who would it be? Max Lamb (insert crying emoji).
Your aesthetic embodied as a...
sound? Am I too cliché if I say rain? I really like the sound of rain.
Color? I’m often afraid of bright colors, I don’t hate them, I just don’t feel comfortable around things that are so colorful. So, I will say brown, off-white, a dark blue, and axiote color. Idk, I guess I’m boring.
Texture? wrinkled fabric
Your grail: if you could own one iconic design work, what would it be? The tea set I mentioned above, or a piece of furniture from Domestic Animals collection by Andrea Branzi.
What’s next for you? I feel like it’s time for me to navigate the design world or keep exploring my own practice as a designer. ︎
